Course Description

Repaying federal student loans has always been complicated but recently has become orders of magnitude more difficult. In this webinar, attendees will learn about the student loan system and what's working or not working to decrease student debt. Our presenter will share what to expect going forward and how to advise clients on what to do with their student loans. Topics covered include how to determine what kinds of loans a client has, how to create a plan to reduce their student debt, how to obtain the most student loan forgiveness in the current environment, and how bankruptcy interacts with student loans. This webinar will also cover current developments in Income Driven Plans, specifically the Saving on a Valuable Education (SAVE) plan, and how to use other programs such as Total and Permanent Disability to discharge federal student loans. Lastly, our presenter will cover why it is better to settle a private student loan before the end of 2025 to avoid taxation for forgiveness on the federal level.

Learning Objectives:

  • Evaluate factors that are affecting the national level of student debt

  • Recognize how to advise clients on managing their student loans and determine the types of loans a client currently owes

  • Identify how to obtain the most available student loan forgiveness including interactions between loan forgiveness and bankruptcy and current developments in income driven plans

  • Evaluate strategies to settle private loans and their tax implications
